Community health nurse army

I am considering joining the Army as a Community Health Nurse. I have not worked much in nursing for the last 3 years but before that have worked 4 years as Public Health Nurse and many years as NICU/PICU nurse. What is the work schedule like to the CHN? Would I work weekends, holidays, nights? I would like to be stationed at Fort Carson, CO. I would appreciate any help.

The Army is the only branch of the military to have a Community Health Nurse specialty. Once the recruiter told me about it I began finding info on in from different web sites. Their function is similiar to a Public Health Nurse and Health Educator. I am wondering if this position is more 8-5 and weekends free. Is there such a thing in the military?

Did you see my reply above where I listed the Army Nurse Corps AOCs w/titles? Is this recruiter you sopke to a Army Health Care Recruiter? If so, did this person tell you the Army Community Health Nurse Specialty AOC designation?

I'm not saying the specialty does not exist, yet if I knew the AOC I'd be a believer. BTW, if your asking about active duty... you may have the weekends off sometimes, then again it is best to think of active duty as a salary position that is 24/7/365. :chuckle

Seriously, find the AOC for this specialty. I'd be real curious to read up further on such.

Sorry, but I know shamefully little about the day-to-day practice of our CHNs. My understanding is that they spend much of their time doing health promotion activities, new mom visits, etc.

Here's a link to the program directorate that may be able to answer some of your questions. Otherwise, ask your AMEDD recruiter to assist you with meeting an actual ANC CHN in your area if possible.

Sir, thanks for chiming in. I must have missed that AOC, 66B, on the list I read. I'm a 66E/66H in the USAR, as well as a Jun 06 USAGPAN [66F] applicant.
