I'm really interested in going to a private college or public university for nursing school, but my problem is I only have a GED. I'm planning on starting my Pre-reqs for the local community college this summer. Will it be possible to transfer to a private college once I get started? How do I go about doing it if it is possible? I really know nothing about college, and I have no one I can ask about this, so I'm sorry if I sound like a complete idiot.

Any credits you earn at the community college will be transferable to a public or private university. The community college route is also cheaper.
70 percent of all RNs in America earned their associate degrees from community college nursing programs. No one is frowning upon them for not attending a private university.
I know that this is one of the (very few) professions where it doesn't matter where you graduated from, but for my own personal reasons I'd really like to go somewhere other than community college. It's not a matter of me thinking any less of community college, it's a combination of a lot of different factors.

Go talk with a counselor @ the junior college youre starting @ and make sure you get a certified transfer. That means that you are guaranteed that the classes you take as prerequisites will transfer to your intended / destination/ college. Private colleges have more scholarship/ financial aide but they're a lot more expensive. Also, be sure you fill out your FAFSA @ FAFSA.org (free money for college) you can do it yourself, dont pay anyone to do it for you.

community college credits are are a great deal for the price because they are the most widely accepted credits you can get. there are plenty of private school courses that don't transfer to other schools. this rarely happens with community college courses. make an appointment to talk with a counselor at your community college - they will be able to answer your questions.

I just wanted to say that I have a GED and I had no problem getting into a private college. It depends on what your GED score was. Mine was over 3400 so it was considered very good and it helped that I also took SAT's.

If you have over 24 credits from a community college, most 4 year schools don't even care or ask for your high school transcripts let alone GED. Do at least 2 semesters at a community college. Easy money.
