Nurses Career Support

Good afternoon all! Was wondering if any of you out there are familiar with RN nursing opportunities in this area. I saw an ad in a regional health care mass mailed newspaper for this "unique nursing opportunity" - to travel a multiple county area to blood drives at schools, churches, hospitals. I think I might like this! I am a certified phlebotomist although I never pursued it as a career path. Any thoughts?

I worked in donor operations for a hospital blood bank as an apheresis technician and team leader prior to becoming a nurse. While our team leaders were EMT's and LVN's (mostly EMT's), the only RN in our department worked an administrative job, doing things like QA on our documentation, following up with donors who had problems, assisting with training, setting policies, etc. She occasionally went to help at large blood drives, but not in a phlebotomist role.

Now that I'm an RN and see all of the work opportunities, I think I would be a bit bored going on blood drives every day. Unlike many areas of nursing, the duties involved in donor blood collection can be pretty predictable from day to day. Occasionally you might be asked to determine the suitability of a donor with an obscure medical history or assist a donor experiencing a severe donor reaction, but most days would probably end up being very routine.
