Has anyone taken Com. 101 from Ivy Tech online? How are the speeches delivered since you aren't in a traditional class setting?

I am very interested in this because I hate speaking in front of a large group!!!!!!

Any advice is appreciated!

I think you need to buy a camcorder from the online bookstore to take COM 101 online. You can go to the online bookstore now and enter the class info and see what is required.

I took COM 102 (Interpersonal Communication) online, and thought it was a great class. I really learned a lot from it that may even help me in my marriage.

Thanks for the info! I have a regular camcorder; will that work or does it have to be a special kind?

When I took COM 101 online at Ivy Tech, we went in for 2 consecutive Saturdays and gave our speeches. It was a great way to do it, much less trouble than recording. They said they did it this way because giving a speech live in front of people is part of the experience of the class. Hope this helps!

I would look into taking Com. 102 instead of 101, unless you absolutely have to. Com. 102 is also a co-req for the RN program. I took it online and it was sooo easy. We didn't have to go to campus or use a camcorder for speeches at all. My instructor made us watch movies and then write a one page paper over them, take quizzes, and post on the discussion board. I never once had to give a speech in any way, shape, or form. It was really good for me because I have anxiety and hate to speak in front of people.

I would completely agree. Who did you have? I had Parmley from the South Bend campus.

I was wondering how the COM 102 worked. I am taking it this summer. I thought I had heard something about movies but I wasn't sure. That class doesn't sound too bad now. It will be better than my other class ENG 112, I have never liked English and I don't seee why we need two college level English classes.

Yes, there are three papers to write. Each time you had a choice of two different movies. They were good mainstream movies too. Then you wrote a one to two page paper about what happened in the movie utilizing the terms from your textbook. Each week you had a discussion board post and reply concerning some aspect of communications, and short quiz. The quizzes are (of course) open book.

Do you remember if the class you were in was a hybrid class? This sounds like a better way to do it than having to video the speeches.

Will com 102 transfer for a BSN? I thought I would have to take com 101 in order to get credit toward my BSN, but if not I will definently take 102!

Lmartin,

I know that at IUK you are required to have 101 for their BSN. I still took 102 online. I think it relates better to nursing. I so plan on getting my BSN so I will still have to take 101 sometime. So, it would be cheaper and less classes if you just go with 101. But I am so freaked out about talking in front of people that I would rather put it off for now.

BTW, the 102 does transfer. and will be counted in the cluster for gen ed courses.

Yes, definitely! I've intended to get my master's since going back to school, and I have the prereq schedule for every BSN program in Indiana printed out lol. I'm actually hoping now to do Frontier's ASN-MSN Bridge, so which prereqs I do is less critical.
