Denver School of Nursing Process Information

U.S.A. Colorado

Published

Hello everyone! I am starting this thread for those of you who are interested in the process of getting into Denver School of Nursing. Throughout the years, I have found that not many nursing students are willing to offer much information about their programs. There isn't much in-depth information about this college on this website that isn't outdated (from 2006). I hope that this information will be useful to some of you and that this thread isn't used to bash DSoN for their lack of accreditation. Everyone knows they are not accredited and that you may want to look elsewhere if you wish to further your education. And, everyone knows that they are candidates for both national and regional accreditation. The regional team visited the school in November and the national team is visiting in the spring. So, with that said, here is my information:

I applied to DSoN in August 2010 for the April 2011 BSN cohort for students with prior education. The application period ended in October. One month later, I received a call from the Director of Admissions stating that I had been chosen for an interview. One week later, I interviewed with the director. The director did most of the talking, making sure I understood that they lack accreditation and what that means if I were to want to continue my education. The questions he did ask me had to do with identifying what stressors may keep me from reaching my goal of graduating - things like having to work, children, etc. He then took me on a tour of the facilities which were quite impressive. After this, I was scheduled to take the HESI a month later.

The HESI tests you on reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and mathematics. The practice book put out by Evolve-Reach is all you need for preparation. The only advice I would offer as far as studying beyond the practice book, would be to memorize every conversion you can. I memorized around 100 conversions due to adivice given to me by the director. This memorization helped immensly! I scored 93% overall and the average for the group I tested with was 81%. You need to score 75% in order to move on in the enrollment process. If you are unable to score the 75%, you will be given one more opportunity to pass. In my group, there were only two students re-taking the exam.

One week after taking the test, I met with the director to sign my intent to enroll in the program. I chose to take pathophysiology ahead of time which saved me $2000. I would definitely recommend taking it at a CC not only to save you a few thousand dollars, but also to relieve your first quarter stress.

I am meeting with financial aid in a few weeks to discuss loan options. I have financing available from family as a back up, but would like to do as much on my own as possible. The most one can qualify for as far as Stafford loans is $28,000. That leaves a little bit of a deficit for students to have to deal with. The Sally Mae loan is really not that great an option due to variable interest rates (which we know are going to rise), and the need for good credit and a co-signer. I do have excellent credit, but do not want to go this route if at all possible.

I received an e-mail last week, stating that the orientation for the April BSN cohort is at the end of March from 9AM - 2PM. Our tenative schedules will be available one month before classes begin. Also, all immunizations, background check, drug test, and CPR certification are due by the beginning of March.

Well, that is all the information I have for now. I really hope that some of you find this information useful and I wish you all much success as future student nurses!

Hi yall!

I am new to this website until recently trying for nursing school again, since my experience in 2007 was a nightmare. I was wondering how you are handling the tuition at DSN and if they have earned their Accreditation yet. I have an interview Monday. Not really sure what to expect at this point since I have my BS in Psychology and have been working as a Youth Correctional Officer for 3 years now and with mental health youth now for 5+ years. So if I get in I will be quitting my job and living with soon to be in-laws :uhoh3:. So if you could post any information along those lines it would be much appreciated and thanks for all the prior information, helps when you are confused with everything out there :yeah:

Hi elexia121,

Many of my friends are making the monthly payments on their loans directly to the school and some went the federal/SallieMae route. It is definitely good to do without the loan if possible. Even with my high credit score, the interest was high. As far as accreditation, Regional is implementing a new rule that all schools need to have candidacy status with them for four years instead of two. This affected tons of schools in the area. So, with Regional, we have two more years to go. National is doing a site visit on August 23 & 24, so we should know soon about their decision. I really am loving the school! Enjoy your interview!

Alright, I am very excited because I just received a phone call informing me that I have been selected to further the application process with an interview. I am just wondering how many students they chose to interview? Do they only select 48 students to interview? Or do they select more students than 48 and narrow down again? I just wanted to know if I am still competing for a spot or being selected for the interview means I have a place in the program (if I meet the test score minimum)

Thanks, just being paranoid!!

You are pretty much in if you get an interview! Good luck!

has anyone interviewed or taken the hesi yet???

I just did my interview, and I take the HESI a2 in 2 days! The interview is exactly what jjhc2006 said, the director did all of the talking, just made sure you are serious about the program so you aren't wasting his time or yours. I have taken everyone's advice on all the forums... studying conversions, fractions, percents, ratios, roman numerals and so on. I haven't spent too much time on reading and vocab since I usually test well on those subjects. I plan on reviewing some medical terminology along with everything in the study guide. I am really nervous because I feel like this silly test determines my career. Wish me luck!!

Good luck Mcca.Lisa 25! I think you will find the HESI to be easier than you think. Just do everything I have suggested, and you will be fine.

Here is my 3rd quarter schedule:

Monday: 8-9, 11:30-1:30

Tuesday: 8-3

Wednesday: 8-11

Thursday weeks 2-7: 10-2

Friday: off

Saturday/Sunday weeks 6-10: Clincal from 7:00am-7:30pm

Did anyone apply to the OCT 1 deadline and hear back yet? I'm still waiting and getting a bit anxious everyday with no response.

I applied before the Oct 1 deadline and got a phone call to set up an interview... looks like they are starting to make calls :)

Hello!

I applied for the BSN Oct 1 deadline and received a call to set up an interview too! Because I live out of state my interview isn't until January. I've been reading multiple forums about Denver School of Nursing and I'm still confused about the schools accreditation. When I asked them over the phone they said they were accredited.... Am I missing something?

Thank you for starting this forum! It has been extremely helpful.

Denver School of Nursing is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career schools and Colleges (ACCSC). Most nursing programs are accredited either by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), or the National League on Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). If you ever plan on getting a masters degree in nursing, most schools require that you have a bachelors degree from a CCNE or NLNAC accredited school. Also, some hospitals require that you have a degree from a school with the same accreditation in order to be hired (UCH is one I know of).

So, if you plan on furthering your education, and/or don't want to be limited in where you can apply for jobs, I'd suggest attending a different program.

I would agree with nurseypants2 to a certain degree. But as a 2011 graduate of DSN I know of many Universities that have accepted DSN grads to their Masters programs, CU Colorado Springs being one of them. I do hope that DSN will be NLNAC accredited soon as well. I know they have an NLNAC accreditation team vist at the end of February. Some of my friends are still in school and are excited about the visit. I was active in the National Student Nurses Association while I was in school and we did a ton of activities that helped the community not only in the Denver area but even as far away as Haiti. I know that the NLNAC like to see students envolved in these types of activities so my freinds are excited about telling the NLN all about how many the students are involved in the Student Nurses Association and all of the activities they've done.
