hi there,
i have applied to get in the fall program at so. suburban college and i heard that the nursing program is on probation? i asked the nursing department and they told me that there was a possibility of probation, but they have not heard anything definite from the state. i currently have a 3.8 gpa and have completed all of my course except for micro (which i am registered to take in the fall) and of course the nursing classes. i work full time and will be making huge sacrifices in order to go through with their full time program. does anybody have any suggestions - should i apply to a different school - should i be worried that once i graduate from the program at so. sub that i will not be able to find a job because of their reputation - or should i not be so worried about this?
thanks for you help

I would investigate further and find out the reason for the "possible" probation. Then, I would probably look elsewhere.

Call the IDPR and inquire as to the status of this nursing education program. With whom are they facing probation? The State of IL? The NLN?
If they are at risk of probation with the NLN, then you would need to consider whether or not you want to pursue a degree at a university without accreditation. That may impact on your ability to attend a Master's Degree program in the future, but would not make you ineligible for NCLEX.
If they are at risk of probation with the state, I would look elsewhere. If they lose their state accreditation, your degree would be meaningless, and you would be unable to sit for NCLEX. There was a similar situation within the last few years involving the social work program at a Chicago area university, where the program had lost its (state?) accreditation, and graduates were ineligible to take their licensing exam. I can't remember which school it was, but I know it was located in the south suburbs. You may want to investigate that, and if it involved the same university, strongly consider that the quality of their programs may not be very good.
So sorry for your situation.
Thanks for the suggestions, I will definitely pursue this further. I knew I had to, I just didn't know who to start with. Hopefully it is just a rumor and I won't have to change schools. Thanks again.
