College with bad statistics?

Published

I attend a community college (2-year/junior college) for nursing in NYS. Untill the college enlisted a new president the nursing program would only take in 100 freshmen. Since the new president has been in office (6 years now) they take in 300 nursing students in the freshman year, and of that about 50 students graduate. This has been going on for awhile. My big concern is the exams in the nursing 3 semester. We have 7 exams at 28 questions a peice and 30 minutes to answer. I have studied my but off, and am failing (very very unusual for me!). I'm not the only one.....75% of the class is failing (again this happens every year). I've taken 3 of the 7 exams so far, and I swear 50% of the test has nothing to do with what is being lectured on or our required reading. There are questions on the test, that I still can't find the correct answer to even after the fact. Afraid to say something to the instructors, cause I heard this is a big No No. B/c this is a big on going problem is there any course of action I could take? Such as contacting the Middle sates or department of higher education regarding the content/questions on their exams?

I'm assuming you checked to ensure they are accredited first. Second I would check the grading policy to see if they grade on a curve.... highest score was a "c", does that make the highest "c", now an A.

I'm a bit concerned as you are about the statistics, but we started 125 and graduated some in the 30's over the two years. I was lucky to catch on and not struggle although many did. So my experience in the pass rate is similar.

However with testing, I was always well prepared from the lecture and assigned reading as well as the labs. Consider not challenging the questions but schedule a meeting with your nursing advisor and briefly review how you note take as well as where your study time is spent. They may have some good suggestions to point you on a track that gives better outcomes.

I'm sure some others will have great suggestions too, just don't go into a first meeting with the guns blazing ready for battle:smokin:

Sounds terrible. In my nursing class, most people graduated. It sounds like a money making scam, they collect tuition then fail people.

It sounds as if

1. you are not being taught the basics you need for your profession or

2. there is something else going on... possible scam?

Those statistics are horrendous, how does a facillity stay in business with students that long with those stats? Is there any way you can leave and find a better school?

Perhaps you could contact the Dean for advice. I agree that if you present your questions in a mature manner someone ought to provide answers. Also, I wonder if the numbers really are that bad, or could it be gossip? In my state the BON has a list of accredited nursing schools in our state and their pass rates. If the pass rate is less than 80% the school has to provide an action plan for improvement. Two or more years and they could lose accreditation.
