I just got hired at a LTC and I know it's too soon to complain, but I can't help it.
These CNAs who work there are horrible. They are treating them like dirt. Yes, the residents can be extrmely demanding and frustrating but they can't help it. I work dementia. They don't mean to do what they do and they surely don't even know they're doing it!
The CNAs are screaming at them, leaving them in dirty briefs, always arguing. I was taught NEVER to argue with a resident/patient with dementia. They won't understand.
UGH! Why do they act this way! =[
Makes me sad.
I get extremely annoyed by the residents, don't get me wrong--but I bite my tongue and keep a smile on my face bc I always think of my mom being treated that way. Would I want that?
Blah..
pointless rant.

It's good to vent sometimes. Just let it out.

I know where you're coming from. Most of the girls I deal with are pretty mean-spirited. I try to remain respectful, and just take it one day at a time. You are going to find rude and ignorant people at every job. That's what I have to keep telling myself.

Stress and pressure can sometimes make otherwise decent people come off as mean. I try to remind myself of that when I get frustrated with coworkers.
I know I have days that, if someone met me, they'd think I was a real b!@ch.

Being a CNA is stressful at times but its not an excuse to berate pts. That is the culture of your job and the culprit for that is management. There is no way the paradigm has been that way and management has not be alerted about it. People are going to try to get away with what they can until they are stopped.

Omg yes, some groups of people do not care at all and just care about getting things done whether the right way or not. Even when I was just a CNA student, the CNAs and nurses at the place of our clinicals would leave us to do things unsuprivised and get mad when we couldn't do certain things our first time ever around. One time, I was asked to undress a woman and I started doing it slowley because it was my first time and I was trying not to hurt her then the CNA I was working with pushed me out of the way and just did it quickly and without any seeming regards with how rough she was undressing this woman and she said to me: "You won't be able to pass the test if you can't even do this" after I had already explained that I knew what I was doing and just didn't want to hurt the woman. I understand the job was brutal but still, where's the compassion sometimes?
Def agree wtih Bigboi. Don't get me wrong residents and patients may annoy me, but I still maintain composure. I may get quiet when I am aggrivated but I surely don't give them attitude for a job I SIGNED up to do, you know? These workers are just constantly bad mouthing the residents..it's no wonder why these residents don't like you! They have demntia so it's even worse on them when a confused person is getting screamed at.
CNA1991, mhhm totally agree with you! That is how the CNAs were at our clinical site. We would use a gait belt, but they would pick the patients up by the arm pit [which is bad for their brachial nerve under their arms] and just slam them into their wheel chair then give me a dirty look for not knowing how to lift like that.
First of all, I am not trying to destroy a persons nerve, second of all i am 110 pounds and the person is TOTAL dependance weghing at like 160. Not going to break my back either.
I should add, I didn't mean to suggest that stress/a bad day is an excuse for mistreating residents...and if people truly are screaming at/neglecting residents, that needs to be reported.
I was talking more about the way a person's disposition can come across to COWORKERS, that's all. :)

You are describing verbal and potentially physical abuse. Please go to your nursing supervisor, then go to your DON, then go to your administrator and if all else fails report this to the department of health (their number is posted somewhere in your building). Your facility can be cited for failing to report & investigate any allegations of abuse. You could be found at fault for not reporting this.
You have an obligation to report this. It is your responsibility to do so. Someone said that management is allowing this to happen. I see that as a poor excuse - there have been many times that someone "assumes" I know just because everyone else seemed to already know.
^ I agree with the above - while it may be possible that management is aware of these things, assuming so is very dangerous. And if abuse does get reported, and you were aware of the situation and did nothing, you are legally considered just as guilty as those doing the abuse.
If it's a "grey area" - maybe someone being somewhat short with a resident, but not downright mean/rude/hurtful, I'd keep a closer eye on the situation...but any actual verbal or physical abuse needs to be reported immediately.
