CNA routine

Published

Hi I am a brand new CNA starting my first job, it has skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and long term care wards.

I have done the three days of training but asked for an extra day, i feel my skills are fine, its just getting into the routine of what needs to be done when.

Ill be working 3-11 shifts, and i was wondering if anybody could give me their daily routine for Long term care, or just in general.

I feel like I should've caught on by now, how long did it take you to really get into the swing of being a CNA?

Thanks in advance!

Assuming you will be on the same station with the same patients? I would say a few weeks. Getting used to your patients personalities and the level of care they require will take a little bit of time. I worked in skilled for a year and now do home health. I liked skilled better. The constant flow of always having something to do is nice, unless you have too many patients to care for.

3-11, I would do a round saying hello to my patients, let them know I am here; then do changes or clean ups. I would probably try and get some showers in (if possible) before dinner. Then, dinner, pass trays and assist in feeding where needed. Assist clients back to rooms or to an activity the facility has going on. Do changes, then finish showers...Get clients ready for bed, pass out snacks where necessary or needed. More changes, assist into bed...amongst answering call lights and helping my team members when I can. Before you know it, the shift is over and you're charting. Assuming there are no monkey wrenches thrown in the mix ;-)
