CNA pre-req class- really unsure about it

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Has anyone ever been super unsure about taking the CNA course? I know I definitely do not want to work as a CNA, and am only taking the course because I have to as a pre-req for the LPN program. I know so many that plan on working part time as a CNA while finishing up their general ed's and throughout the LPN program, but I know I can't do it. I don't start the class until mid June, but I'm so nervous. If I'm pretty sure I won't like the messy and personal parts of the CNA duties, am I crazy to think I will be ok working as an LPN? Is there anyone else that has felt this way about CNA duties? I have so much respect for those of you that are CNA's, I just don't think I'm cut out for that type of work, and am not sure how I will make it through the class!

busia,

the problem is that there are many lpn/rn's that do not think that "cna work" is "their work." the truth is...it is their work. i am an rn that started as a cna. it is no one's favorite part of the job, but it is the foundation upon which nursing is built. i've had rns stand at the door so that i (then a cna) could clean up the patient before they did their assessment. now, keep in mind that this is the perfect time for a nurse to assess the patients skin and ability for self care, etc. i've had an lpn hunt me down to ask me if i've taken her patient's bp yet because she is waiting to give him his bp meds. really!! my point is everything a cna does is the nurses job!! some are lucky enough to have cna's there to help. i know of hospitals that are trying to go to lower nurse to patient ratios and not hiring cna's. as far as the "private parts," you will most likely "get over it." it should not hold you back from being a nurse.

please understand that your post sends a certain message to these cna's. they think...."oh no, here is another future nurse that will serve to make my already difficult job that much harder because they do not want to get their hands dirty." you may not get this, but work for one month as a cna and you will get it!!

to everyone: i understand where your frustration comes. i ask that everyone follow the terms of service for this website. this means no personal attacks. you may debate the topic, but not the person. let this thread stay open so that others may understand your frustrations. be constuctive and explain, but do not attack. busia may overcome the fears and become a great and helpful nurse, one that cna's love.

This is true,I have worked/witness both sides of the spectrum, keep in mind nurses also have their own assignments/job descriptions (ill pts, complaining family members, occasional admissions, MD orders, med pass, etc)...not to mention responsiblity to make sure all tasks were delegated properly and completed by end of shift with the faithful few staff members...
