CNA in Labor and Delivery?

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Can a CNA work in Labor and Delivery? I really would like to work with moms and babies, helping them as much as I can.

Also, does this vary by state?

Thanks so much!

You can be a surg tech certified and work as an OB Tech. All hospitals that I have encountered use OB Techs in L & D because they are cheaper to use than the RN/LVN. RN/LVN can scrub too. I'm not sure if all hospitals use OB Techs but the ones I've encountered do.

As others have said on here, the only job offering I have seen that is related to this would be an OB tech. When I applied for some, in the process of following up, I called and found out that ordinarily they get 600 applicants for an OB Tech position. eeeek!!

Of course it doesn't hurt to try, but prior experience elsewhere would probably be almost necessary.

What do you think about medical assistants? I don't know if that's already been asked. I feel like its all been CNAS but are MAS likely to work in L and D?

No they usually in medical offices.

Specializes in Masters in Nerd.

I live in The Sticks in Arizona, but my town has a pretty nice hospital.

My hospital's maternal/child area is SOLELY CNAs, with one RNP running the circus. So, there are CNAs in mat/child. I know because I did some clinical days there :) anywhoo, I know for a fact they our hospital only hires CNAs that have been doing their job for a really really really really long time. Like 20, 30, 40 years, especially in the nursery where the Tiny Humans are concerned.

The CNAs arent just CNAs though, they are also surg. Techs and they help with really routine procedures like hists and c-sections, and they clean the baby up when it is delivered and the RN gets the weight/height and then the techs/CNAs do vitals hourly and take care of the sick and the preemies. :) Our hospital hired them as CNAs and then trained them in a in-facility program to become a tech.

I work at a LTCF, but I am going to try for mat/child as soon as I can. :) working with the children was so fulfilling and it was nice that you could carry the patient with you if you forgot a towel or whatever and they couldn't tell you off or cuss you out or anything. :)
