Nurses Disabilities

Published

So i am almost done with my cna program and have been doing better than i ever expected to do. I have a learning disability and i also get extremely shy and nervous around new people and situations. Almost brutally quiet lol. Anyway on monday we will be going to our first nursing home with a group of 8 and our teacher. We will each be partnered with a classmate and cna from the home. We are doing 3 to 11 for 3 days and i am soooo scared i really am dreading it. Like i have no clue how to walk in a patients room and just start making convo. Or should i even make convo the whole time im doing care? Also how will i know where and what to do on a normal day. Im scared ill not know what to say or what to talk about or how to come off to certain patients. Im not outgoing at all. But i am friendly. I do have compassion and a big heart. Another thing too...how did everyone feel dealing with someone real instead of ur class dummy or eachother. I need advice.

Generally, there will be a CNA or nurse with you. You aren't the first to be nervous. We all were. Each visit gets a little easier. Nothing to it but to do it, as my sister used to say.

Specializes in Geriatrics.

I am a CNA Instructor and we also pair our trainees with a CNA. I tell my trainees, that the first day its ok to kind of hang back and watch. But on day two, they need to wash their hands, put on gloves and get in there to learn it. You will almost certainly not be left alone. And as for interaction, trainees generally prefer dealing with real people over the manikins. Good luck. I think you will do great.
