Cliques on your unit/co-workers

my unit is cliquey!!! They all speak the same language so I cant understand; more like so most people don't understand. I really don't care for the most part, just an observation of my unit's culture. Any similar stories?

Yes, I just walked into a very clicky unit -- but I don't care. I'm there to learn, to be there for the patients, and just to do my job. I sort of hate the a.m. shift change, because everyone is sitting around chatting and backslapping, etc, but then the day gets going and I'm on my own.

I wish it weren't so, but as time goes on, I think people just develop those working relationships by having spent time together on the job.

I do hate nurses, though, who can't even manage a smile or hello. It's seriously snotty. I just figure they're not worth my energy and just move on... I am a great person and friend, and they are missing out on it! :specs: On the other hand, several are friendly, and I just choose to concentrate on them.

I think you are right! They are not snotty to me, just used to speaking their own language and having a certain pecking order.

I had a similar experience at my old job as a student nurse tech. When I first started, I was a bit intimidated by the clique and felt "left out" of the conversations spoke in Tagalog. But after proving my competence, (which is kind of hard as an RN student in a tech position) I became part of the family. I realized that the language thing was just easy and natural for a lot of the nurses because they were born and raised in the Phillipines, it was nothing against me. When I left that job to pursue a job in another city, the loss of my "family" was the hardest part about leaving. I'll be starting my new job in a few weeks, and I just hope that my new coworkers are as nice, caring, and understanding as my old family.
