Clinicals

Published

hello everyone!

i am a first semester nursing student, and in a couple weeks we start clinical. i am excited yet, as you can imagine, nervous!!

can someone out there give me some pointers? i don't know what to expect as of yet. as far as i know we take vitals, bathe the patient, and assessments?? can someone shed some light on me!?

thanks in advance.

i know it depends on the program you are in but in my adn program this is what we did the first semester of clinical.

we were at nursing homes/assisted living

  • vitals
  • am care (bathing, oral hygiene, etc)
  • administed medications
  • complete physical assesment
  • various assessments (database addendum, psychosocial, nutritional, functional health, mini mental exam, to name a few - basic assessments to help you learn the type of information to gather from patients and how to communicate effectively)
  • we learned how to give various types of injections
  • iv bags, not how to insert an iv but how to change them, types of fluids, replace tubing, etc

thats all i can think of right now, i am sure there is more though. meds were big though...looking up all the info on them in preparation for administering them.

i hope this helps, good luck!
