someone told me you need at least an overall gpa of 3.5 or higher to be guaranteed a spot into clinicals of the nursing program at MSU despite the minimum gpa of 2.7. is this true?

The 'actual' minimum GPA admitted can be much higher than the one in the catalog because so many people are applying. When a school has far more applications than they have space for, they begin admitting at the top of the ranking (highest GPA & qualifications) and continue down the list until all slots are filled. So - if you're applying with a cohort of high-flyers, the lowest GPA may easily be >3.5. But if the cohort is made up of applicants with more "average" GPAs, the lowest admitted GPA may actually correspond with the catalog minimum.

You may be able to obtain the 'actual' GPA admission range for previous classes from the school's admissions office. It wouldn't hurt to ask.
