Are externship/clinicals good enough to help you get a RN job or do I need to work as a CNA or phlebotomist for exp?

In most cases, an externship or preceptorships that are part of your school experience are sufficient. However, it is always wise to research your specific job market to find out what the norms are for your region.
And of course, having any type of experience is not going to guarantee you a job -- or a specific job that you want. If you don't make a good impression during your externship or preceptorship or your regular clinicals, then it could do you more harm than good. Experience helps, but they are opportunities to display your "true colors." Make sure your "true colors" are attractive to employers.
