clinical requirements

Published

I am considering becoming a nurse but have heard many situations about students being refused to do clinicals because of a criminal record. Does anyone know what clinics/hospitals in GA will allow student with a criminal record? What exactly are they looking for?

It really really depends on several things...What kind of crime, felony or misdemeanor, and how long it's been since the crime...I know in Wisconsin certain crimes such as battery or child neglect will keep you from being an RN no matter what.

I have several misdemeanors that fall up under moral turpitude crimes, over 7 years ago. no felonies

It really does depend on the details -- which you probably don't want to share here. You'll have to talk with the schools you would like to attend, perhaps even submit your records for them (and the clinical facilities they use) to consider.

I am involved with the approval process at my hospital and we look at the actual court records for any staff or students who want to come to our hospital who have a criminal record. We make the decisions on a case-by-case basis only after we have reviewed the details.

I spoke with the school and the only info they gave me was that its up to the clinic. I was hoping to get more concrete information. I guess I won't really know until I cross that bridge. Thank you for the info.

I do not know your situation and the specifics but I will suggest you contact the department of state licensing and ask if you can get a license with a crime of moral turpitude at all in the state.

Here is the story of why I suggest you do this.

My son who was a minor at the time (3 weeks shy of being 18) was caught shoplifting in the state of Texas. One the ticket he received from the officer at the mall he put 18 for my son's age. Then later when we were going through the court process he was put into adult court. When the judge and DA realized he was a minor at the time of incident it was moved to the juvenile courts. The last court date my son had was finally in juvenile court and the judge explained that what he had done by shoplifting was not only "shoplifting" but but also a "crime of moral turpitude" that if convicted as an adult he would never be able to get state licencing for anything such as teaching, nursing, police officer.. You get the idea.

Now I don't know if the judge was just trying to scare my son who wants to be a teacher eventually or if it is fact. Because of this I suggest calling the state you live in to ask.

I have been to the BON website, and it states that the board can refuse any applicant that has a felony or moral turpitude crime. But it also states that they will review each applicant on an individual basis and consider the merits of each applicant.

I took that to mean, I may have a chance.

I have been going through the courts with a recent incident that happened with my ex boyfriend. Long story short they are dropping my charges down to a third degree misdemeanor negligent assault. I have been a licensed nurse for 3 years. When I report this to the board will they discipline me for this? Has anyone had a crazy experience like this?
