Published

Hello,

I am researching the info about CNL program at U of MD, I need advice/info. from who already graduated, in the program and are pusuing the program,

-the recognition of the program? I know that this program is just started couple years ago.

-How easy for you to find a job after graduate?

- Is it hard to get in?

- what is the competitive gpa? mine is less than 3.5 and will try my science gpa to be 4.0

Any info will be deeply appreciate, thank you

Specializes in ICU, currently in Anesthesia School.

If you are an RN already, find a specialty to get your masters degree in and bypass the CNL. The degree comes with a masters tuition and degree, but simply prepares to be a staff RN. It was designed with the second degree student in mind in order to pull more tuition from their pockets than the second degree BSN did- You will notice that the second degree BSN track is not offered to second degree students anymore. ( I am speaking as a UMD grad.) Again, I recommend the school, and the RN to MSN is an excellent choice to obtain an MSN, but get it in anything but the CNL as it has the application of high priced toilet paper for the experienced RN. :lol2:

thank you for the reply,

I am not an RN yet, but I am thinking about to get any degree to be one. I think MS-CNL is the interesting program for who already has a bachelor's degree from other field like me. IS it hard to get in though?

thank you

I have been told it is incredibly competitive. you may also be interested in the traditional BSN there- depending upon how many of the pre req's you already have out of the way. i was told they have 800 applicants for 80 BSN spots.

DO you mean the MS-CNL that competitive? or the BSN one? I would like to know more about the CNL program and willing to fight for it.

Sorry. The BSN is the one with the 800 to 80 ratio..however I was led to believe that the CNL is more competitive. I'm not sure that I believe it though. Some of it seems like bluster...which is odd. Anyway..are you local? I believe (have to check the web site) that they are holding a graduate open house soon. I have been and it was informative. If you are interested in CNL, bring your transcripts, and they will go over them telling you what you need and if you press them and you can get a feel for your competitiveness.

I would suggest that you examine why you want the CNL. I also thought that was the route I should go but upon reflection realized it was only because I felt I deserved the degree since I already held a BS. CNL was not the Masters specialty that is my goal and it wouldn't saveme any time on that specialty, so...in the end it didn't make sense. It is better for me to go the BSN route and gain valuable experiance before pursueing the MSN. Plus, I honestly prefer the credibility one gains by working your way up through the ranks, even if that is simply perception on other's parts. The experiance counts and I will have gained some needed perspective.

Anyway, good luck. Go to the info session if you can. They're really eye opening!

Dear Chaundrah,

Thanks a lot for the information. I actually am comparing between CNL at UMB and ABSN at JHU. ONe of the reason why I am leaning toward UMB because the financial wise. I don't do the Traditional BSN at UMB because of the timing, I want to enter the job as fast as I can. I want to be the CRNA someday and the CNL program at UMB will lead me to the goal like every BSN program anywhere else.(I just talk to the Director of CRNA at UMB :))

I live in MD and I definitely will attend both open house programs. Then will decide which one is best for me.

Thanks again,
