Clinical Ladder Advancement

Nurses General Nursing

I have been a nurse for about a year now and have reach the point where it has been recommended that I begin advancing up the clinical ladder to a CN2. To do so I need to write my narratives and am wondering if anyone has any recommendations on what to write about. I know the topics need to include caring, clinical knowledge and decision making, leadership, and collaboration but am having difficulties coming up with examples of situations that highlight these. Any recommendation you have would be appreciated :)

Ask for some exemplars. The program managers should have them available for you. These could be just (blinded) copies of previous submissions or even some that they have created to provide guidance. If they don't have exemplars, you could take this opportunity to suggest that these be added to the materials and instructions to support the program.

Based on my experience with these types of programs, they are seeking factual 'stories'... of very specific instances in which you have applied or demonstrated the skills in question. They don't want to know how you 'feel'. Include as much detail as possible - without compromising patient confidentiality. If other staff members were involved, you can include their names - this makes the narrative stronger, as the reviewers could actually double-check your story for validity. Be sure to re-check for grammar and spelling- you want to make a good impression.

Good luck!
