Clinic VS Dialysis VS Rehab VS PP for first job!

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hello! I am a new graduate ADN on Long Island. It's a VERY hard area to break into as a new grad and especially as an ADN and NYC and Queens/Bklyn are even harder. I am already in a BSN program (I started the last semester of my ADN program) and I'll be done in 1 year but no luck getting a hospital interview yet, and I apply to new ones every day. I have landed 4 interviews and so far have gotten 2 offers, and the other 2 interviews are later this week. I know its hard to go from LTC or outpatient into a hospital, but these are my only options right now and it's better than no work at all.

I would love to hear some thoughts on which of these jobs makes the most sense in terms of experience.

Offer 1: Hemodialysis at an outpatient center.

Offer 2: Clinic in a homeless shelter. (I am leaning toward this)

Interview: Sub-acute rehab.

Interview: Planned Parenthood.

I don't want to wait too long to make a decision and end up losing offers. I do have some concerns, though. If I take the dialysis job, I'll be using acute skills (accessing sites, hanging lines, phleb, etc) but will I be pigeonholed into dialysis since it's such a specific specialty? If I take the homeless clinic (which is what I want) it's more like primary care and I won't be starting IVs but I will be drawing blood. The sub-acute rehab pays more but I know people have had a hard time getting into a hospital after that (at least here on LI). Planned Parenthood seems like it will be a really well rounded experience, clinic nursing, community health nursing AND periop/OR nursing. My only concern with this is the only hospitals here on LI are owned either by the Catholic Health Services of Long Island, Northwell Health, the state/county and Mt. Sinai. Will PP effect my chances of getting in if the hospital/health system doesn't believe in the type of care PP gives (abortions, etc)? Which bothers me because I do and I would love to have this job.

Does any of this make sense or does anybody have any sage words of advice?
