Clinic job/have to take boards yet

Hi,

I graduated mid August with my LPN degree and have my boards scheduled for mid September. I just accepted my first clinic job which I start before I've passed my boards. Here are my questions:

1) For those of you who work in clinics, what do you like and dislike in this setting?

2) I know clinic pay is lower. If I can ask, what was your starting rate in the clinic as a new grad?

3) How did you study for the nclex-pn? Is there a certain book you used? I have a review book based off of a 2002 test that I had to purchase through school. I don't know if I should invest in another book.

4) Has anyone failed their boards while working a job? Did they keep you around doing other tasks until you passed or let you go?

Thanks for your help!

I'm not a new grad but I worked in a clinic last year for a few months. I can tell you that I did not like working with the MA's , they felt that their education was comparable to a nurse so I didn't get any respect. It was also extremely hectic,as we had more patients than we could comfortably handle. I didn't like giving immunizations to babies and small children ( I've never done pediatrics). It was a very stressful job!!! Plus one night a week we had to stay for " evening clinic" which for me because I was new seemed to always fall on friday.

I am RN, not a LPN, so I don't know specifics about hte PN boards, but I would reccomend a book newer than 2002 to review with, just so you have hte most up to date information.

There is a woman who failed her RN boards whle working on my floor. THey just demoted her to a NA until she takes boards again.

Regarding the review book: Have they changed the format of NCLEX - PN like they have for the NCLEX-RN withing the last couple years? If they have, I would definately purchase a new review text.

Also, there have been two people on my floor that I work with that didn't pass their boards and have been demoted to a tech until they pass the boards. Good luck to you! Let us know how you do! :)

I too recently graduated from LPN. Also, I recently passed my boards It was a very stressful week. I studied Mosby's NCLEX book and study a computer program named LPN-NCLEX made incrediably easy.

As for your other question about working in a doctors office. I also just started there, too. Yes the pay is much lower, but look at this way Holidays off weekends off. What could be better. I worked in a nursing home for nine years as a STNA and went to school at nite for the past 2 years. This is a step up for me. I just finished my first full week at the doctors office and I love it.

Good luck on your boards.

Movic, LPN
