Hello Everyone!

I would like to Thank Everyone who answered my other post. Your honest opinions are Greatly Appreciated. I am considering a move to Florida at some point in the future. The cities that I am considering are: Jacksonville, Orlando, St. Augustine, & Tampa. Out of these cities, which have the best opportunities for RNs, pay, career growth, location, etc? I am also looking for Convenience as well, such as Commute time, shopping recreation, major shopping areas, restaurants, beaches, Flea Markets(Swap Meets), Community Colleges, Military Bases, Affordable Housing, Low crime Rate, Safe environment, & Spiritual/Metaphysical shops or centers? Also interst on Medical Spas, Doctors/ Plastic Surgeon officies as well. I am an RN who lives in San Diego, where the High Cost of living is getting way out of hand, & Good affordable housing is unheard of. I have worked in a psychiatric facility for the past 12 years, which will close in January 2008.

I also work per-diem at a Surgery Center in La Jolla, CA. I will be taking some Medical Esthetic classes in the fall, such as Tattoo Removal, Laser Hair removal, Skin Lesion Removal, Acne treatments, & Scelrotherapy. I also study astrology as a hobby, (have been for the past 18 years) and will be getting my certification here in San Diego. These are my hobbies & interests, and I would appreciate any info on this. Your honest opinions &

any info would be most appreciated. I want to avoid any Rural areas, but don't want to work in any downtown areas with heavy traffic either. Also,

which of these cities have the Most alligators?:uhoh3: LOL! I am scared to death of them, & want to avoid areas where they are abundant:nono: Is it true that they will come in Your yard, & up to your door? I would have a Heart Attack on the spot!:o Please Respond!

Any body of water in Florida is liable to contain alligators. Having said that, I've lived in FL 24 years and have never had a gator come up and approach me and especially not at my front door! I have a small lake about 10 feet from my backyard and have never seen one in there. I have even gone inner tubing/swimming/canoeing on rivers and seen alligators and not been approached.

Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tampa are all metro areas while St. Augustine is lovely but a small city. I'm from Pinellas county which is adjacent to Tampa and in my opinion, a lot more desireable area to live in. Many people live on one side and commute to the other. The actual beaches are in Pinellas County, not Tampa, and they are beautiful. Orlando is inland so you'll have to drive to get to the east coast.

Except for St. Augustine, I think the areas would be pretty comparable in terms of shopping, recreation, etc. The housing market here has recently cooled down so you will probably have lots to choose from and they should seem very affordable coming from CA. I'm not a nurse yet so I can't really help you in that aspect :)

I agree with Galore. I live in Tampa but am moving to Pinellas soon, I never ventured out that way until I found out I was moving and now that I do, I am very pleasantly surprised...lots more awareness of cultural activities on that side of the bay....

as far as alligators go I have seen a few in my day in residential area but trust me they are more terrified of you than you are of them.

They are no supposed to be fed so that they don't get too curious but there should be a phone number in the local phone book. Wild life folks can scoop em up and remove the gator if needed.

hope that helps

well, as far as military bases go... Tampa has MacDill AFB. Jacksonville has a naval base and Ft. Walton Beach in the panhandle has another AFB... I'm sure there are more, but off the top of my head that's all I can think of.

I live close to Tampa, but in a developing area... my cost of living and residential taxes are lower but i still work and went to school in Tampa. I really like it here. I think that even though the roads can get congested around the area, its pretty easy to get around and manageable. Whereas in Orlando, I have the hardest time seeing where the road sings are posted and getting around... as far as things to do.... it's a pretty eclectic mix of things-- museums, parks, some amusement parks, etc. There is Hillsborough Community College, and St. Pete College for community colleges, and USF and University of Tampa are around, USF offers Masters and Doctorate programs. Low crime rate? Ehh, it's questionable. http://www.tbo.com has a crime tracker for the Tampa Bay area that i've used for when I've moved to see what kind of things have happened in the area.

Orlando has a bunch of outlet malls and some really nice regular malls, which I'm an outlet fan; in Tampa, there are 4 nice malls, one about to be built at the junction of I75 and I275 in just north of the Tampa area.

As far as spiritual shops, etc. I'm not really familiar with it, but I'm sure you could google it and find some things.

As far as the beaches go, they're in Pinellas county adjacent to Hillsborough County-- Clearwater is always crowded, Honeymoon Island and Sand Key are nice, Ft. Desoto is my personal favorite-- with boat launches and campgrounds and the beach itself I think is beautiful.

I've lived in Florida my entire life, 23 years and have only seen a gator in the wild I can only remember once, just sunbathing and posing no threat to anyone. It was in a reclaimed water area post-phosphate mining. Other than that, I've only seen them at zoos and such. There are sharks, jellyfish and stingrays at the beach, but every year you're reminded about doing the" stingray shuffle" in the water, no matter which beach around the state...

I know it's a kind of long response, hope I could at least answer some questions around the Tampa area!
