Chronic HBV and Nursing School?

Hello all--I was recently admitted into an RN/FNP program which I am THRILLED about! As part of the admissions process I had to have a physical done and provide vaccination records. When I went to my PCP for the physical form, she told me that she would sign the physical form if I later provided proof to her that I had disclosed my HBV status to my school. When I got home, I called the local health department to ask them about disclosure policies--they told me that I do not have to disclose my HBV and that I may want to keep it to myself because of possible discrimination.

I feel very uncomfortable with my physician at this point. At the very least, I think it's time to find a new PCP.

Am I under any legal obligation to disclose my health information to my school? Can my school revoke my admission based on this?

Discrimination is a horrible thing and this is coming from a male, Mexican American, Deaf pre nursing student. I've been discriminated on basis of gender, race, and disability all more than once. While it's cruel and unfair, in reality I feel it has made me a far stronger person and someday I hope it will make me a superior nurse.

Think of it this way, if you can't strongly advocate for your own right, if you're not outspoken enough to speak up when need be, is nursing really the field for you? Don't get me wrong, I, in no way, am opposing the idea of you becoming a nurse. I'm hoping it will serve as an inspiration to know your rights and to speak up for yourself. Let the thought of being and incredible nurse inspire you as it does me. When you want something as much as I (and hopefully you) do, nothing short of world war 3 will stop you from getting it.
