I am interested in getting my CHPN. I have ordered the core curriculum and the study guide. I wish there was some kind of a class to take or an on-line class that could help prepare me for the test. I do better in a class than reading and studying on my own. Thanks for any advise!

I did one of the online assessment tests before I studied focused on the exam. The test was to help me find out where I am at with my knowledge. Based on that I outlined a plan to study. I did not attend a class because
1. I am learning better by reading when it comes to memorizing facts and complex problems
2. I did not get the impression that the re-view class would actually help me to learn but that it would be more to fine tune after I have studied already
There are classes, as far as I remember, offered by the HPNA - check it out.
My experience was that the questions and problems you have to analyze in the test are based on the core curriculum. Getting the workbook was the best study decision. You do not get around learning the facts and memorizing - which you can do with the core curriculum. After that or parallel to it study with the work book. The test is hard - I am a good test taker and found that there were some very challenging questions . Especially the scenarios ! And the only way you would know how to approach those is by studying the core curriculum carefully because they are applications based on the knowledge you have compared with critical thinking.
Also - you have to be careful to think about what you "should" do and not "what happens in reality". Personally, I think that the CHPN test is much harder as compared to the NCLEX because it really tests your expert knowledge in this area.
I also practiced the conversations with the work book and while I had only 2 questions in the test where I had to do a calculation, I am now very proficient which helps me in my daily work. You never know how many questions have those calculations. I had a lot of scenarios.
After the test you will know right away if you have passed or failed.
I passed first time with I think 91% but I did sit down with the core curriculum and read it chapter by chapter, did the work book, went back to review the material I did not feel confident and so on.
Good Luck! I am glad I got certified because it shows evidence of that expert knowledge that others may claim but may have no evidence through a 3.party verification.
My work offered to pay for nurses to take the test. I studied the day before the test and passed by a few points. My attitude the whole time was that I wouldn't lose money or career if I didn't pass it. I took it due to peer
presure lol. So just have a pass or fail attitude and you'd be fine. Also I finished nursing school as a valedictorian so I think that helped too.
First off Good luck on the exam!
I took it on the 17th of this month and passed with an 85!
I've only been doing hospice for 9 months but I have oncology/ palliative experience (about 2 years) and I studied for one month. Techically I studied for 3 week because I went on vacation and didn't touch a thing.
I read the core curriculum front to cover and did all the practice questions. study guide
There were alot of oncology questions on mine so I really lucked out
Spend a lot of time on symptom management and pain management.
I had a few math questions, (know opioid equivalent conversions!)
I do not think you need to take a prep course.
