Chill nursing jobs where you still use "hands on" skills

Published

Hey guys- due to my health issues (arthritis, etc), I have to leave my medsurg job. I'm a new grad 6 mos in, 23 yrs old, and I love practicing nursing skills and being hands on, but I can't deal with the chronic pain from being on my feet so long. I love learning new things and I always found medicine interesting, that's why it sucks to leave so soon (I'm giving myself until a year to find a new job). I just need a job more at my physical pace.

Any suggestions?

I worked bedside nursing with a young nurse who had rheumatoid arthritis. When she had flare ups, she couldn’t even squeeze a BP bulb. Nor could she stand long periods of time. She took a position in a pediatric clinic and said it was much more manageable.  They don’t usually require vital signs other than temp. She gave vaccinations and other injections. Also the stress was way less.

Medsurg nursing is HARD. I actually never did inpatient nursing - I went straight from the paramedic role to new grad ER nurse. Do you want to stay in hospital nursing or do you want to go to outpatient? PACU and Pre op are the most least demanding jobs physically in my opinion in the hospital. Outpatient jobs could be clinic, outpatient Pre and post surgery, etc. There are actually lots of alternative opportunities out there.

ER is all the pace you need.
