Children's Mercy in Kansas City

Published

Hi there!

I was wondering if anyone has any experience working at Children's Mercy in Kansas City. The Kansas and Missouri state threads are pretty dead, so I thought I would try my luck here! I am specifically interested in Children's Mercy South (Overland Park) or their PICU. My family is thinking of relocating, so I'm trying to do some research now. I have my BSN (second degree from an ABSN program) and would have 2 years of critical care peds experience from a Level I trauma center. Thank you so much!

You pretty much have to know someone to get on at the hospitals in KC. At KU only 5% of the people who are hired are not from an on staff referral. My friend that works at CMH said there is is an in house joke about "Who did you know?". And the "coveted" positions are almost always filled in house. Not to discourage you from applying. Just trying to give you the reality of our market. The hiring process is also very long. It can take 3+ months. Just so you can plan ahead.

Thanks so much for your honesty! I figured it was tough (one of my friends had a similar experience with her hospital in New York- the hiring process length, etc). Our move is quite a ways out, and I wouldn't be leaving my current job unless I had something locked down out there. But it can't hurt to start thinking ahead about the timing of things. Thanks again.

Is the 5% for KUMed really accurate? I have been on staff there for a few years...some floors are huge with only hiring PCTs but my old floor hired almost exclusively from an outside pool.

I was going to make a comment about CMH being hard to get in to though, so I suppose it is all about perspective?

I would definitely get licensed in both states if you do not already have a compact license for MO. The MO licensing process will take longer. But CMH flagship is MUCH bigger than South and the commute not that much longer if you stat in the metro area proper.

I know KU has a very small PICU (and a dedicated peds floor) because I cross staffed from Burn there. They do not generally get the same acuity as CMH but there are usually openings. Otherwise, I do not think any other hospital system in the area has dedicated inpatient peds?

Sorry, I know this is an old post!

Thanks so much! That is really helpful info. I appreciate it!

Hey there! I work at Children's Mercy and we are definitely hiring at our Overland Park location and in our PICU. I know this is an older message but feel free to email me [email protected] if you have any question.
