Chattanooga Hospitals' question?

U.S.A. Tennessee

Published

My wife just accepted a new job in Chattanooga. A few questions.

1: If I understand correctly Parkridge, Erlanger and Memorial are the big 3. What are the pluses and minuses of each? Pay/benefits for each?

2: If my wife is working downtown and we would both like to live pretty close to work where is the best place for us to live and still have a yard in a decent neighborhood?

thanks in advance.

Hi, You might want to check out North Chattanooga if she is working at Erlanger. It is very close. Stay north of Forest Avenue though in my opinion. Property value is pretty high. Old artsey neighborhood. Values probably just going up. If she is at Parkridge or Memorial North Chatt would still be good but might want to consider Tyner area and parts of Brainerd. Just check out the neighborhood at all times of day and night before you buy or sign a lease.

Benefits and pay are about the same for new grads for all 3 hospitals. I don't know about for exp. nurses as I am a new grad. Parkridge is much smaller than Erlanger and Memorial. Her specialty might make a difference in the hospital she prefers. Hope you like Chattanooga.:welcome:

I am starting at Erlanger on Nov. 5th.

Hey, Sorry about that, just saw the part about your wife accepting a job in downtown Chatt. I think the shift diff is something like 3.50 per hour 11-7 but I am not certain. 3-11 and weekends is less like maybe 2.00 I believe but again I could be wrong. It sounded good when I interviewed but since I haven't started yet, I can't check a paystub or anything. It was substantial, made a big difference when I made a quick estimate of what my take home would be. There might be someone on here who is more certain. Mahage

Welcome to Chattanooga! I've been at Erlanger for a good while now. Overall, it's a good place to work.

As for places to live, North Chatt tends to be trendy & pricey. I'd love to live downtown, specifically Ft. Wood, which is 3 blocks from the hospital, but it is so far out of my price range. Stuart Heights, Manchester Park and Fairfax Heights are good areas convenient to downtown with decent/fairly modest housing prices. I live in this area & I'm 6 1/2 miles from work.

Again, welcome!

I actually have neat little place rented out over in Lupton City. Super inexpensive area close to the ones you describe, but like living down town. It depends on what you have to have. I don't live fancy and my house in North Chatt. has a fenced in yard and is one of the little old cottage houses. We haven't put a lot of money into it, but need to in order to keep up with the property value over here. Hope to now that I will finally get to return to work full time. There are a few bargains left over here, and it is a great place to live, but you are right much higher than Fairfax, but Stuart Heights is pretty high dollar I would think. Anyhow it is all about what you want the most.

I live in Fairfax Heights, so howdy, neighbor!

Our home prices have been appreciating, especially with the new houses being built off of Valerian There's a house on Laird that sold for 169 this year (in-ground pool & a jacuzzi, too), so even with the "mortgage crisis" our area is remaining stable.

True, Stuart Heights is pricier...the non-refurbished places offer the best deals (as in any area). Of course, I've seen larger houses over there, so...I suppose that per square foot, it's comparable. Glad to have an allnurses neighbor!

See you around!
