How hard is it to get hired. I'm taking the test and really just want on, to do something different than med surg. I'm an LPN though. I saw on their site that several positions other than Med-Surg are open to LPN's entry level. But at work I'm hearing it's hard to get on, the med test is a bear etc.

What is med-surg? I am a upcoming nursing student. I have a bachelors and thinking strongly toward LPN rather than RN because of the waiting list. :crying2:

What is the pay of LPN's in New ORleans? :specs:

thanks,

Do not waste your time going for LPN! I did it and am now struggling to get my RN 2 kids and a husband later, no money, and no sympathy from anyone especially the instructors who think LPN's should jump right back into school and know everything there is to know about nursing. If I knew then what I knew now, I would have skipped LPN school and went straight for my RN. Anyway that's just my opinion.

Charity and University Hospital are in desperate need of nurses of any kind. If you want something other than med surg, you will probably do better at University hispital, which is the sister campus of Charity. That's where the maternal-child cluster is located. If hired, they orientate you to the unit as long as it takes for you to get the routine. You can call human resources at 504-903-0663 or nurse recruiting at 504-903-1015.

And if you're in nursing school, you can join their stipend program once you've completed at least 6 months of classes. They pay you $500/month. For each month that they give you the stipend, you have to work 2 months at MCLNO (Charity and/or University Hospitals) after graduation. A good deal if you ask me, but I'm just starting nursing classes next week so I can't apply for it now. Next year? Definitely!

If you have a BS, I would suggest looking into accelerated programs in N.O. at Tulane and there is one at ULL in Lafayette. There are also several other ASN programs throughout Louisiana. If RN is what you are really going for it is worth looking into. Either way, I hope you settle into what you want. Good luck!

MOON 30,

I don't know where in LA you are, but there are also some accelerated programs in Mississippi as well. From what I understand, they are well worth the out of state fees. I also agree with just going straight thru the RN program. I was an LPN first, and I just think I went the more difficult route.

A job in the University/Charity system is a good one, they do also have good benefits!

Also, if Charity Hospital New Orleans can fall on your resume', you can pretty much work anywhere in the US. It is a hard, busy, and renowned place to work.

Gee wiz, where are you going to school? That is terrible that the instructors feel that way. I am also a LPN and at Southern University for my BSN but the instructors there are wonderful about my being a LPN, also the course work is not hard because I know most of it anyway from being a LPN. I got the LPN first because I wanted to be able work and make decent money while in school and at $19.00/hr I think that's decent money. I hope things get better for you, hang in there.

I agree with that, do the accelerated program. The one at Tulane is actually for Our Lady of the Lake, they are in conjunction with Tulane. You only do one (very intense)year and they pay a stipend, the trade-off is when you are done, you have to work two years for Tulane. Go to Our Lady of the Lake College website and all of the info is in there. They only accept once a year and seats are limited so if you are considering it, look into it asap. Good luck!
