Chances of me getting accepted to a Texas nursing school with low GPA?

U.S.A. Texas

Hi all, just got off a phone call with a nursing program and told me that most of those accepted have a 3.5 GPA or higher and felt pretty discouraged. I will be graduating from A&M in the Spring with a 3.0 GPA (with a non-nursing major) and don't really know where to look. I would like to stay in Texas but want to know if there is a place that will accept me. I'm starting to study for my HESI and TEAS. Ideally Texas A&M is where I would like to continue my nursing degree but I know it is awfully hard to get into.

I'm in the same boat. I'm a pretty strong test taker so I'm really depending on my high entrance exam scores. Someone suggested that I apply to ABSN programs since they look at your application a bit more holistically ( texas tech, ut, midwestern, etc). Private institutions are also more likely to accept you, but the cost is too much for me personally. I also applied to a few ADN programs. They are pretty competitive as well but the completion of all your general education courses counts for extra points at many schools. If you are also a good test taker, I know Tarrant County College admission is based soley off HESI scores so if you do well enough (<93), you automatically get in regardless of GPA. This school also has a concurrent program with UT Tyler so instead of waiting for a bridge program you get your BSN at the same time. NCLEX passing score is also really high so its not just a bs school. I know cc is not necessarily ideal but if you really want to be a nurse I feel like you can do it! (speaking to myself as well LOL)

Hi,

I hope to help, if you are still looking. Try checking out Central Texas College (CTC) in Killeen, Bell county. I graduated here last year. I had a foreign education for high school. Took my HESI twice and passed the second. You have to get enrolled to the school first, so 2.5 GPA is OK for a start, then do the pre-requisites this is where you give your best but nonetheless mine was sitting at 2.5-2.7 I still pursued ADN and sent my application and got accepted to the program. You just have to try and don't be deterred. CTC is accredited by ACEN so it's a game changer. Don't read the reviews of the school because each professor and class has a unique way of teaching and each time is a different experience. Also, you will be in the DHS (department of health & sciences), so the reviews do not really apply. Once you are accepted there's no turning back it's either you make it strong or fall out, the good thing is all of your professors are amazing & will help you succeed especially the Dean of Nursing. It was fun for me and scary all the same time had my fair share of tears and sleepless night but if you are determined you know you got this!

Treasure the friendships you'll be making as you will need one another to get through. Teamwork makes the dreamwork!

Good luck and enjoy the journey. ?
