Nurses Men

Published

Hi to all:)

I'm looking at attending Nursing School at the Addison Campus of fall 2015, and I noticed t it's about 91% female. Does anyone know what the environment is like attending such a school with very few males? If your a female or male reading this....what has your experience been like? I'm in my early 30's just getting out of the Military, so I won't technically be one of the youngest:(. Thank you and I look forward to any responses. have a blessed day!

I attended Chamberlain in St. Louis, MO and I can understand your concerns. When I started at Chamberlain, I was 29 and still in the Reserves, but I had been off of Active Duty for about two years. I will say that being an "older" male in a class full of early 20's females did not affect me in any negative one. If anything, some of them came to look up to me because of my military and life experiences. I made several friends in my class, as well, that I will probably keep in touch with for the rest of my life. One nice thing is that the men's restrooms are practical spotless from light use :roflmao:

Age and gender really wasn't an issue. I think the only time I would wish I was somewhere else was when they would talk about, you know, "girl stuff." Like boys and make up and all that stuff that will make a man look at his watch. You'll be fine, though. The level of maturity that you bring and your military training will be something you will be glad for. Another thing, too, is that you probably won't be the oldest in your class. There were students at my school in their 40's. Thirty-two is nothing, but a drop in the pound :)

I wish you the best and feel free to hit me up if you have any questions.

Hello, I'm currently at chamberlain in Addison and will be done fall 2015. Although I agree there are far more female than make students, there are a good portion of male students and the school also had an organization that male nursing students can join to get involved and help each other study etc. I myself am 31 and I find that there are an equal number of younger students 19-25 as there are 25+. The school is a "for profit" so in saying that there has been a couple situations regarding clinical placements shortages with certain classes due to the influx of students the school accepts. This is my issue with the school. However, I have had a great experience with the instructors until I came to medsurg and in my opinion they just weren't up to par. You will have that in many schools though so I can't say it's just ours. We do have several military men and women in our class and they all seem to be able to keep up and help one another.

As with any female population there is the gossip you will hear but many guys avoid this as do other girls bc you will find the LAST thing people have time for is other people's problems. This gossip usually comes from the younger crowd and doesn't affect classes. The teachers don't put up with class disruptions and there are several classes that involve partners so people just learn to get over themselves and move on. Hope this help.

Good luck to you and thank you for your service :)
