Case study: Timentin & Tobramycin IV

Published

Hi

I am having problems researching as to the reason why Tobramycin cannot be infused into the same IV Line as Timentin once its runned through. I know they are imcompatable drugs however to back up my argument about the incompatablility of not using the same line has troubled me.

Can anyone help me with this. Any journals etc?

Appreciate the help  :specs: :chair:

Most drug guides state that antibiotics of the aminoglycoside class and penicillin class should be run at least one hour apart when used intravenously. As to why these particular antibiotics cannot be run in the same IV line (after flushing), remnants of one probably inactivate the other. To find research-based answers and protocols, consult your hospital pharmacist (always an excellent resource). I also agree with crb613 about posting this in the intravenous nursing forum.
