Case management to OR?

Published

Is this unrealistic several yrs after leaving step down unit for hospital case mgmt?  I see some hospitals have 6 month training prigrams for new grads or nurses with no OR exp.  It was something I really wanted to do 20 yrs ago, but chose to go with int card care and sorry I did not.

This was literally my career path; working 5 days in case management and utilization review. I wanted 3/12hr shifts and needed  change. I took the PeriOp 101 course through my hospital and have been in the OR for 7 years!! So, yes, it can be done!

That is the one thing I do not like about case mgmt.  Even if weekend cm staff is needed they still have cm's work mon-fri and then take weekend on call ev 8th week.  I prefer 12's - I don't care if they are weekend shifts!

I haven't regretted leaving CM once, and I was happy with the job, I needed to get off the 5 days a week. If you're interested in going to the OR, look into a PeriOp 101 program, it's a great foundation to start your new career off with!!

Our local hospital requires a 2 yr committment - have you heard of anyone wanting to leave/travel possibly after a year?  Would you owe them $$$?
