Nursing placement/shadowing a CM in the US

Specialties Case Management

Published

Hello :)

I am a RN in London with a BSc in Nursing (BSN), currently working as a junior sister in the community (home health) setting. I am just about to start a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health (Community Specialist Practitioner route). Here in the UK you can register this specialist qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and among other things it gives you an advanced physical assessment course and an extra nursing prescribing qualification. My practice teacher is a Community Matron (Case Manager). In the UK Community Matrons are based in the community but work between the hospital (normally ED) and patient's homes.

Basically, as part of my training I am allowed an alternate practice placement (5 to 7 days). This can be anywhere I want as long as relevant to my course, and I must be the one organising it! I would really like to shadow a CM, Home Health or a Public Health nurse in the US as it would be really interesting to see how this type of nursing care is delivered in a completely different healthcare system (compared to the UK National Health Service).

I know this might be a little tricky due to the nature of our work, but I am able to get certification from the Nursing and Midwifery Council, university, etc confirming I am who I say I am and confirming that I am on this particular educational programme. I also hold a national Criminal Records Bureau certificate confirming that I don't have any criminal convictions.

If anyone could point me toward the right direction, I would be forever grateful. It would be great if I knew where to start organising this!

Many many thanks in advance!

Best way is either to contact a University which has case management courses or call a hospital in the area you wish to visit and ask for staff education department.
