If I have my bachelor's degree in nursing and some experience, do I need to take the CAS? How will my skills be assessed when moving from US to AU. AND, if I were to just apply directly to a hospital and they accepted me, should I have already been in the process of getting approved for a VISA, or are they going to wait on me with that job while I get my VISA at that point?? I mean, after all, if I get sponsored for a job, that helps my VISA prospects, so should I apply for a job first???
Thanks!

I haven't heard of anybody being sponsored lately....Australia has caught up with the rest of the world and is hiring experienced or specialty nurses on most of the jobs advertised.....did see the Alfred (big city hospital in Melbourne) stating on their website for sponsoring overseas nurses Alfred Health : Home
I think, otherwise, google alfred hospital melbourne.
You have to be assessed no matter what, to be sponsored means that you get to stay and allowed to work permanately, it does not give/help you to nursing registration. BTW must be under 45 for this.
Others please correct me if I am wrong....think i US Bachelors is ok, you would have to get assessed. They are making Phillipino nurses do bridging course, I have been told because their course resembles the American Nursing degree, American medical terms and drugs nd procedures, but then you have perhaps completed more secondary schooling...etc, courses totally in english...someone else may have more constructive knowledge. New National Health practitioners registration board......AHPRA - AHPRA Home

Please on further inspectio of my reply.....
]I haven't heard of anybody being sponsored lately.. sweeping generalisation.....I am sure some hospitals will but at the moment all the jobs I see advertised are for nurses with much experience or with post grad quals. Or for the new grad programs that start in January....these may take overseas nurses but in vic. the CRITERIA (can always be tested) is to have worked as an RN very little and to have graduated in the past 2 years and of course to be registered with the national board.
I have two years experience as a critical care nurse, and by the time I would be actually going I'll have nearly four. So, I'm not a new grad. I'll just have to check things out and see what can be done. Thanks!
