Caregivers in the UK

Published

Hi, everybody!!

I'm currently in the US working as a certified nurses assistant. I will be moving to the UK early next year after I marry my English fiancé ;)

I was just wondering what the requirements were of caregivers in the UK. I know that in some US states no certification is required to be a carer in nursing facilities, and that you get on the job training.

Do I have to become certified in the UK to be a caregiver in a place such as sunrise assisted living?

I've worked almost a year on a locked dementia unit, and I love working with dementia/Alzheimer's residents.

Thank you!

Generally experience would be the requirement. There its no formal qualification for unqualified care staff although some areas may ask for an NVQ in health and social care.

You can get your qualifications assessed by UK NARIC (for a fee, of course) and they'll provide you with an equivalent which you can use when you submit applications. I'm not sure what NVQ level they ask for, but you could probably check out on some job sites and check ads since they usually specify the requirements.

In general, no qualification required. Experience is a huge bonus for employment. They will train you on the job in their way of doing things.
