Career Crossroad - RN vs. OT

Nurses Career Support

Specializes in Hospice/Home Health/SNF.

Hello All,

I have a  nurse for 10 years now, my experience is mainly in the SNF, Home Health, and Hospice settings. I recently started the FNP program. Since I started the program I've been really questioning myself and my commitment to this. When my son was 3 years old (4 years ago), he was diagnosed with Autism. This event catapulted me to quickly educate myself and help support him. His support services included Speech Therapy and Occupuation Therapy, he attended developmental preschool where there was also a team of OT and ST available for additional support. I read everything I could find on sensory processing disorders & Autism. I made sensory gadgets (from scratch) specifically for his sensory needs. I think any parent would do all of this to help support their child. Needless to say, this experience completely changed me. I am now debating if I want to continue with my FNP or if I want to pursue my master's degree in occupational therapy instead, and I have questions. I don't really know what to do.

The salary would be about the same in this state (AZ). I wonder if I would still be able to keep my RN license?

Any input is appreciated. Thank you in advance.
