Career advice needed

I just saw all my grades posted online. 3 A's and an F. Yes, it looks like I flunked Intermediate Algebra. Do I retake it or acknowledge that I can't do the math nursing requires and move on to something else? I am already 42 and can't take too much more time to complete college. I am just sick to my stomach over this. Any help would be appreciated.:cry:

    Is this the first time in a long time that you've taken math? Have you ever taken algebra before? If not, I wouldn't give up personally. Math can be tricky. I know my school's math resources includes a variety of ways to take that class. You can take it traditionally, hybrid/online or self-paced. The best part of taking the self-paced or online versions is all the tutors you can get access to at the math lab. I HATED the traditional class. Homework 4 nights/week. It seemed I didn't learn anything, all they talked about in class was "can you show us how to do #7 on the overhead." And that was the entire class. The prof never had the time to lecture on how to do the next night's homework. So each night after class I had to teach myself how to do the next round of assignments, only to be faced with the teacher doing them on the board the next day instead of teaching us the NEXT night's work. Hated it.

    Personally, I'd say take it again and arm yourself with the knowledge that you need to take full advantage of all the tutors and supplemental instruction your school probably offers.

    I agree with the above post. First, you need to figure out WHY you failed the math course and identify resources to help you overcome your problems with math. That's a solvable problem. There are resources out there. Use them so that you can conquer the required material and move forward with what you want to do with the rest of your life.

    Don't let a problem that's relatively easy to solve derail you. Find a good tutor (or remedial math class ... whatever) and build your math skills from the beginning if you have to. Go back to 1+1=2 if necessary. But wrap your head around numbers with a good teacher and master it. Then it won't be a problem any more.

    I would say stick with it and re-take the class. I too agree with the above posts. Determine where your lower point are in the class, concentrate on those, and perhaps even develop a system of studying that can be more structured and allow you to achieve a higher grade. Good luck to you.

    Have you taken beginning algebra? If not, that would be what I would do. Also try finding a friend or a tutor that is good with algebra that would help you. I dont think you should give up, Im sure it is really really discouraging but try again. Also, try going to ratemyprofessors.com to see if your school is on there and then try your best to find a algebra teacher that students seem to really learn from. It could have been partly the teacher you had. Or ask other people that go to that school which teacher they think is good. Talk to an advisor at your school and see if they have any advice on what you can do, you never know. It cant hurt to ask!
