Care for the Diabetic patient

What should a IDDM patient do before and after exercise?
Why is it that NIDDM patients can be off meds if they diet and exercise regularly, but IDDM patients cannot?
How does exercise affect blood sugar levels?
Why does blood sugar level increase after surgery?
When would insulin be taken: before or after surgery?

1) Check their blood sugar, exercise causes blood glucose to drop in type 1 and type 2 diabetes, so they want to have an adequate level before hand and be sure they aren't hypoglycemic after exercising.

2)The islet of langerhans cells in the pancreas of the type 1 diabetic (IDDM) are gone (generally due to the immune system), thus they do not make insulin. A type 2 diabetic (NIDDM) is however insulin resistant, but their Islet of Langerhans cells still produce insulin.

3) Causes it to decrease

4) Stress causes the release of cortisol which increases the blood sugar levels.

5) After surgery I would imagine, you don't want the person becoming hypoglycemic during surgery, though you may want some more clarification on this one from others.
