Why is it necessary to have the leads from the crash cart connected to the patient when doing a cardioversion? Since you can get a rhythm and even sync the QRS's using quick combos alone, why do you need to apply the leads? What would happen if you tried without the leads? Thanks.

Unit would probably work fine without attaching the ECG leads for a CV or defibrillation.
However, if transcutaneous pacing is needed, both the external pads and ECG leads (3) will be needed.
I think it's mainly a comfort factor to apply the leads as well as the defib pads during a CV. :)
I googled the one we use most (HP XL), but check the manual for your defibrillator unit, and let us know if you have difft info. :)

My understanding: when you start the cardioversion/pacing the rhythm falls off the screen unless the leads are in place. This is because the capicity of the pads stop reading the rhythm & begin conducting & aparently can't do both at the same time. You can defib a pt with only the pads because is delivers the shock then returns to EKG.
