Capstone/New Grad

Published

Hey all, Quick question which I know ultimately lies up to me...but I have a hard time making my top 3 choices for capstone placement. I like each of my choices and am trying to think somewhat strategically from a job market point of view (sf bay area) but also want to do what I love. My choices are Ped's, adolescent psych, and nicu. I've heard that while there are not many ad psych new grad programs there are hospitals more willing to hire you as a new grad with a psych capstone, then medical units are to hiring you without an official new grad program. I like them all equally, but with ped's being my ultimate favorite--hopes of possibly one day being a pediatric nurse practitioner. I can also see myself enjoying the nicu, even though some of it seems a little overwhelming as of now. Then of course theres ad psych which i know my clinical instructor spoke highly of me in. So thats my dilemma in a nutshell. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Specializes in NICU.

If you are drawn to one particular specialty, then do your capstone in that specialty. If you are undecided between two, then pick the one that you have little exposure to. For example, if you are deciding between peds and NICU and you have had peds clinicals, but no NICU time, then choose NICU capstone. That way you can make an informed decision. Who knows, you may have your heart set on peds and PNP and do the NICU capstone and love the NICU (not that I am biased ;)).
