Anyone working with CAPD?

It has been years since I worked in dialysis (helped open and organize a dialysis unit in the mid 70's) and CAPD seemed to me to be the way to go.

Just wondered if it is still used.

There's a big push on for PD/home hemo. Outcomes for the right patients is pretty solid, and empowerment of the patient managing their own health is pretty cool. Bottom line...for the right patient, they just feel better.

Companies are being asked by government to show improvement in their outcomes...this is one process that can help them. Labor cost is less.

Patients go through a training process and then if they are stable, they come to the clinic once a month for review.

Nurse primary role here is educating and teaching, and being available to clients if they have a question.

Very cool process.

I work in Peritoneal Dialysis. We generally start out patients out on CAPD, obtain the KT/V and do a PET to determine membrane type. After that we train most folks on the cycler and they do CCPD (and sometimes one manual CAPD during the course of the day). Some folks like CAPD though and don't want anything to do with the cycler. Personally, I think CAPD is the way to go, yes it's a hassle doing the exchanges during the day, but you aren't hooked to the cycler all night long.
