Canadian nursing student with US green card - licensing question

Published

Hi,

I'm entering my final year of a BScN at McGill Univeristy, in Montreal QC, Canada. I'd like to work in the US after graduation. I'm a Canadian citizen with a US green card. I wanted to know if it would be best:

1) to pass the Canadian nursing licensing exam (OIIQ for Quebec or CRNE for rest of Canada), then apply as a RN to be licensed in the US by writing the NCLEX and board exam for whichever state I end up taking a job offer?

or

2) directly write and pass the NCLEX USA as a new grad and apply to jobs in the US

Any other advice? Thank you so much in advance!

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

CRNE is now NCLEX so you may want to consider asking state if they will honor NCLEX that you passed for Canada.
