Canadian nursing looking to travel

Published

Specializes in ICU.

Hey all,

Im a canadian RN, graduated last year, and am starting the application process so I can travel nurse in California. I also have my BScN.

Just from reading the boards, ive learned a few things, but I would like to know more about working conditions, pay, etc.

Ive heard California is unionized, is this true. Ive also heard things about pt ratios, etc.

Do pay rates varry depending on the contract you sign? Here in canada, you get paid depending on how long you have been a nurse, not by the job.

If I were to work telemetry, or stepdown, would you get paid more than just med surg?

I have experienca in Surgery, and Stepdown (monitored beds) where the pt ratio is 1:2. Ive just completed a critical care course, so and just orientating to a MICU where the ratio is 1:1, sometimes a nurse is doubled.

What is the typical ratio you have seen in a step down unit or surgery unit?

Can anyone give me some names of some decent hospitals. My biggest fear is working in a hospital where im swamped with too high patient ratios, or just a crappy environmen overall.

Lastly..im Canadian, I hate the cold, so hence the wanting to go to California. Ive been to Sandiego before and think its a beautiful city. Are there any other places similar? I want to be in the southern California area.

I appreciate any responses.

Thanks

Cher

What did you decide to do? Are you now travelling in the US? Why don't you consider a Canadian travel nursing company, especially since the recession in the US and the low American dollar?
