Canadian looking for RN job in MI

Published

Hello, I am a Canadian RN living and working in Ontario and looking for work in Michigan. I'm just wondering if anyone has anyone suggestions as to safe/nice areas to live and work in. I'm a young female that will be living alone. I've never been to Michigan and am not familiar with the cities- except the bad rep Detroit has. Any tips would be very much appreciated :)

I don't live in Michigan anymore. However, I worked at 2 major Detroit hospitals in the 14 years I was a nurse in Michigan. There are many Canadian nurses working in the City of Detroit itself particularly DMC and Henry Ford. It's not that bad to work in Detroit and commute from somewhere else (either Metro Detroit suburbs or the Southwestern Ontario area - I worked with a nurse who lived as far as Sarnia). I lived in Oakland County and took the Lodge Freeway to work without problems even during winter storms. While Detroit gets a bad rap for crime, the hospital campuses are safe and well-secured by campus police and video cameras. All hospital entrances are monitored and some only allow badge access. I've worked in the ED at Henry Ford Main - lots of Canadians! You may also look into suburban hospitals if you want but I wouldn't rule out Detroit hospitals for the experience you can gain. However, be aware that job openings may not be as favorable with the US economy even in Detroit.

If you're not set on being near major metro areas, Check out Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. It's a great hospital in a fun little city. I have no idea what their hiring situation is.

I will check it out, thank you!
