dear all:
many thanks for your reply in advance.
i'm a foreign nurse who is looking for work in Ontario (CNO approved) in Rehab but have heard that only RNs with ER and ICU credentials are allowed to work in Canada. it seems the Human Resourse and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) will only approve ER/ICU RNs for work visas.
i'm quite distressed by this news. can anybody offer any confirmation to this and some advice too? i'll be most grateful!
best regards

I can only speak for Manitoba, but there are many opportunities for other than ICU or ER experienced foreign trained nurses here.
We have several working in rehab, pediatrics and in small rural hospitals.
Perhaps you mighjt think about moving a little west.

I find that hard to believe. A friend is a NICU/peds nurse and was recently approved for a work permit. Best to get your information directly from immigration since rumours are often untrue.

Finskater-
You don't need HRSDC approval for a job in nursing when you are immigrating from the US - this is because nursing falls under the Skilled Worker category and because of NAFTA. You can work in any area you are offered a job. It also makes the wait for a work permit slightly shorter, or so I've heard... I'm still waiting! I will be working in surgical recovery in BC.

Thanks very much for your replies. Will look westward ho!
this info was told by a number of Hospitals HR reps in fairs I've attended and also Immigration Lawyers. will be checking with the Immigration/HRSDC offices, but their websites does not provide any confirmation...

Unfortunately, i'm from Singapore who is not a NAFTA partner. sigh...
WTO,FTA,G3.. the politics of governments have conspired against me! sorry for the rant! :imbar
Good luck to you. Personally, I think BC is the nicest place to live anyways:) Healthmatch BC may be able to help you with immigration questions: http://www.healthmatchbc.org . They helped my friend.
Yes, if you are going to move to BC Healthmatch BC definitely has all the info for you - and don't worry, employers are used to waiting for foreign nurses to get through the immigration paper chase.
