Can the teacher fail all of us???

Published

Okay, so we just had our first lecture and lab exam in A&P II. I got a pretty decent grade on the lecture exam (92), but haven't gotten the lab exam back yet, and didn't feel as good about that one.

The average grade for the lecture exam was a 67.97. The average for the lab exam was a 56.29. She doesn't curve. Is there anything we can do about this?? In talking about the exam with other students, it seems the teacher was intentionally misleading on various questions, and was also highly misleading about what information she was going to test on.

I am ticked, but feel powerless to do anything about it. Should we all just suck it up and hope she makes the rest of the exams a little bit easier? I honestly feel like I could not have done anything more in terms of studying for these tests, and am feeling like there is a real possibility that I won't get that "A" that I really need in this class.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

If you got a 92 and the average was 67 then you're doing pretty well. Now that you know the instructor is prone to try to mislead you, you can watch out for it next time and study not just what she suggests will be on the test but study everything that was covered. I'd give it a bit longer before you try talking to her. It's also possible she will change her teaching style now she knows the averages for your class.

Yep, She can and will. However, just one C per class is all she needs to justify her efforts. My first Calculus class, I was the only C. Everyone else, D or below. However, two students retook the final and made a C and a B (my girlfriend, ha ha). And this was out of about 8 to 12 left in a class of 45 starting. So percentage-wise of those who did not drop, it slides through the cracks of acceptability.

Of course, the Instructor may not be there too much longer; but that does not help those under her now. However, A&P is a filtering course, so she may get away with it.

You will be the top dog of the class (always a good goal) and will learn though. But you may not get the A you deserve, OR learn as much because you are looking out for bs word game tricks of a psychopath. The Practicals are much harder than the Exams, since memorizing spelling of 150 items or more is tough. You probably did fine.

If its your first semester and you had no choice in instructors, then that's the breaks. If you had a choice, shame on you.

Nope. No choice of instructors. In fact, the school won't list which instructor is teaching what course---you don't know until you show up the first day. This school is also so (insert explitive here) that they also have stopped announcing which books the classes are going to use (a not too shielded ploy to increase the bookstore sales, I think). So...not only do I wish I had a choice in instructors, but I wish I had a choice in schools!

Here's the really weird part: I had this teacher for A&P I. While I didn't think she was great, I didn't find her to be unfair. Definitely not the case this go-round. I cannot understand what could have caused her to be like this! Was the summer really that bad?

Thanks for the support. I guess I'll just do the best I can. I cannot ask anything more of myself. If I don't get the "A" and it affects my ability to get into nursing school, then I guess that's just the boat I'm in. Really sucks though. Seems like it shouldn't be that way.

I feel your pain...Our instructor was not posted until all the AP II classes had filled up. Once I say her name and read about her on rate my professor I nearly threw-up. Well she is living up to her billing. I got a 75 on the first lecture exam and I feel lucky. Almost half class got D's and F's. Really not much of a choice except stick it out and do your best. This finishes my pre-req's so I don't want to drop and push my chance of starting the nursing program 1 semester later. Best of Luck, and, at least we know we are not alone in our crappy little boat!

Our branch of 3 CC locations has a real low 1st time pass on RN test, so they really clamped down on requirements this Fall. Actually, the low first time pass rate was due to our location 'informally' accepting students based on 'every' Administrators' wishes. Well hopefully that little clan-game has stopped. And it WAS the last quarter of the wait system, vs the best qualified GPA/tested students (duh).

Its just the newbie or the slow-to-catch-on instructors taking it way too far. And some are naturally inclined to rake the students over the coals, if they had their wishes. The tenured profs will not change much except use the higher standards, and TEACH accordingly. The newbies or slow instructors will get washed out. Too bad students have to suffer too.

You will probably get an A, but it doesn't sound like you have many A-team members to help you through. Its one important thing learned going to engineering school: many good minds make impossible tasks only a routine matter. Everyone I speak to that gets a high A on Practical or Exam, I get their name and number (cell or home). That's the ones that will likely be successful and be there for the duration :saint:
