I have a petty theft conviction and this is my first offense, can someone be a nurse with a conviction like mine?

That is up to the state board of nursing for the state in which you want to be licensed. My suggestion would be to contact them and start asking questions and find out.

I agree, check with your state BON first, if they would allow you to sit for boards you must check out the schools in your area. Some do an exetnsive criminal search while others do not.

I have a misdemenor count and I was approved to sit for boards. I think it depends on what the charge is. My nursing instructor had us to write a letter to the BON explaining why I had this charge. I also had to send a copy of the disposition along with the letter. You can get a copy of the disposition from the courthouse where your case was heard. I am in GA so that's how it worked for me.
