Can the MNA (MA Union) actually limit my salary?

Hey there—

I’m in the midst of taking a new role. My surgeon wanted to give me a huge (40K/year) raise from what I’m making now. The clinic is a part of the Massachusetts union and he was told they can only pay me a certain amount because the union has an upper pay limit.

Is this true, and why for the love of God would the MNA union care that I’m making more than they think I should?

Argghh—this is maddening.  It’s like winning the lottery but being unable to find your ticket..

Unless the position requires membership in the nurses union, the MNA has no business dictating how much money you make.  However, where I work there are set minimum and maximum salary schedules for each job classification even for non-union positions.  This could be because we are a state funded institution with salary grades that are embedded in each of the job titles.
