Can LPN's operate ultrasound equipment?

Published

Hello,

I am an LPN holding a NJ license. I was just hired at a pain management and physical rehabilitation office.

At this office, I am told that my main responsibilities there will be:

1. Operating an ultrasound machine.

2. Operating Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation unit.

The facility was specifically looking for an LPN for the position and I am told by the doctor that I am following all rules and regulations under the scope of practice for an LPN, but I am still concerned. Is everything I am doing totally legal under Medicare rules and regulations?

I contacted the board of nursing and they said that they can not answer any specific questions.

Any help in this matter would be highly appreciated.

Specializes in Cardiac Care.

Yes you can as long as you are trained on them. They are not specialized equipment that require certifications or an RN. You can do application with the ultrasound for pain management. Ultrasound equipment in the Pain control centers is usually just rubbed over a muscle to help increase blood flow and stimulation to reduce inflammation. A TENS unit can be used in homecare and it invloves placing electrodes on the skin and setting the impulse control switch. Like a radio dial, in the case of the TENS I have at home.

These are office level skills and an LPN can perform them. Did you have an Alternative Therapy or Pain Management section/topic covered in you LPN school?

We did and it went over the uses of these devices.... Good luck with the new job. They are not trying to make you practice out of your scope.

thank you so much for your reply, i REALLY appreciate it
