Hi, I have retired my RN license in S.C. Can I do voluntary work with an inactive license?

Yes, you can, with some guidelines.

Here is a link to the applicationform form for a volunteer license in South Carolina.

According to the Labor Licensing Regulation South Carolina Board of Nursing,

  • The board may issue a volunteer license without charge to a retired nurse who has been granted inactive status and has practiced for at least twenty-five years or until age sixty-five after a minimum of fifteen years of practice.
  • To obtain a volunteer license, the retired nurse must apply to the board, demonstrating that they have completed at least twenty-five hours of initial training with the charitable organization and have been on the official inactive status list for no more than ten years.
  • The volunteer license allows the retired nurse to provide nursing services through a charitable organization approved by the board, but only to one specifically identified organization.
  • The volunteer license is not transferable, and a separate application and license must be issued for each charitable organization the retired nurse wishes to serve.
  • The volunteer license can be renewed annually upon application and a demonstration of at least twenty-five hours of service or additional training with the same charitable organization during the preceding year.
  • The volunteer license can be renewed indefinitely as long as it has been renewed annually without interruption with the same charitable organization and all other qualifications continue to be met.

Best wishes,
